Walking In The Pursuit of Happiness

This past weekend was no different than most weekends, i.e. run errands, clean house, spend time with the family, hold skin care classes, etc.  Except that on Saturday morning I was annoyed by anything and everything.  I was so grumpy that I couldn’t even stand myself.  I knew I had to do something quickly to get back on track or my entire weekend would be ruined, so I did what usually helps me get back to a better place – took a walk with a best friend and just told her what was annoying me. There is something about walking and venting that helps.  In an hour I was calm and ready to enjoy my day.

I’ve done this all my life with some of my best friends and there is a mutual understanding whose ever turn it is to vent – don’t agree with anything, don’t make any comments, instead, just listen and continue walking.

According to studies walking on a daily basis has many physical and emotional benefits. It can help you:

  • Lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol)
  • Raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol)
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes
  • Manage your weight
  • Improve your mood
  • Stay strong and fit

As I finish writing, I notice that the sun is peeping out of the morning fog at the beach and the fresh ocean air is calling me to get outside and take a walk!  Whatever your reasons may be for walking – enjoy your journey.
